Non-motorised Transport & Active Mobility
Data-driven analysis of pedestrian/cycling flows, demand forecasting, and simulation for complex urban spaces, transport hubs, and major public venues. We use advanced microsimulation and space syntax analysis to inform design and operational decisions.
Why pedestrian planning matters
Pedestrian movement patterns and crowd dynamics are critical to the safety, efficiency, and attractiveness of urban spaces and transport infrastructure.
Design Excellence
Evidence-based design that improves wayfinding, accessibility, and user experience in complex environments.
Operational Capacity
Simulation and forecasting to optimize facility design, queuing systems, and load distribution at major venues and transport hubs.
Strategic Resilience
Understanding pedestrian dynamics to plan for emergency egress, accessibility constraints, and future growth scenarios.
Oxford Street, London
Oxford Street is the busiest shopping destination in the UK, with millions of annual pedestrian journeys creating complex movement dynamics that impact retail performance, safety, and amenity.
Our partner Francesco Angelelli pioneered the use of Wi-Fi data collection to understand real pedestrian behaviour at Oxford Street and across London's West End. Combined with targeted surveys, big data analytics, and demand forecasting models, we developed an evidence base to support strategic decisions about street design and operations.
This included accessibility assessment, design support for Oxford Circus, and validation of the impact of new transport infrastructure (Elizabeth Underground Line extension) on pedestrian demand patterns.
Visual Outputs & Case Studies
Here are examples of the type of analysis and visualizations we develop to support strategic decision-making:
Dynamic Pedestrian Simulation
Agent-based microsimulation showing pedestrian movement, congestion, and operational capacity at major venues. Used for evacuation planning, wayfinding design, and facility dimensioning.
Space Syntax & Urban Integration
Integration analysis showing connectivity of urban networks (green=high integration, red=peripheral areas). Essential for masterplan strategy and sustainable mobility planning.
Accessibility Analysis
Walking accessibility mapped with consideration for topography and slope. Shows 5, 10, and 15-minute walk times—critical for sustainable mobility planning in constrained environments like UNESCO heritage sites.
Spectator Operations Planning
Load zone analysis for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022, planning spectator transport for 650,000 passengers with record-breaking ridership. Demonstrates data-driven operations planning for major events.
Our Methodology
